Goodbye, September....hello, Black Cat Awareness Month!

This blog post didn't get made yesterday, like we hoped.  But just because it's Saturday, doesn't mean we're going to let a great post go to waste!

Why?  Because, it's October!  It's the first full month of Fall.  And although the East Coast just got battered with driving rains and floods, eventually the leaves will start to turn.  And then it'll be all Pumpkin Spice Lattes and Caramel Apple Ciders up in this joint.

So The Mew Crew thought we'd kick it off October in a special way.  I mean after all, this is an awesome time of year for both kitties and humans because it's a prime time for adoptions (see: why we're busy).

But October also brings a new set of challenges for cats...specifically all black ones

Why?  Well in case you haven't heard, people do horrible things to cats.  Due to superstitions and October being a "spooky" month, black cats will become a prime target for evil doers.  I mean there's people out there who hate black cats all the time...it's just now they ramp up their efforts.

Although the data to support such is a little fuzzy (heh), black cat owners are often urged to keep their kitty inside to keep them safe.  Even owners with cats who are only partially black should heed the same warning.  I mean...is being careless when bringing in the groceries worth losing your kitty to animal cruelty?  I assure you, it's not.

There are also reports a person will adopt a black cat for October because...well...they'd make a great costume accessory or addition to the home decor.  I mean, it's fun to giggle about, but let us not forget that owning a kitty is Very Serious Business.  It's tragic to hear about a black cat being adopted for only a month and then dumped in a shelter come November because "this just wasn't working out like I thought."  Black cats are not costume accessories, mkay?

In response, most rescues and shelters completely lock down adoptions of their black cats. It's not like these fuzzy pals weren't gettin' a bad rap anyways.

So what is The Mew Crew going to do during the month of October?  We are gonna spend all 31 days of it telling you exactly how awesome black cats really are!  I mean, sounds like the perfect time, right?

So we are officially declaring October as Black Cat Awareness Month on the blog.  That's right.  We're doing it.  We're taking a stand all month long for black kitties!  We don't want to hide the awesomeness of black cats during a time when people may be paying extra attention.

Have a black kitty or a cute story to share?  We want to know! So if you have an all black furry friend, send us some of your awesome photos and cute/funny stories of black kitties and maybe we'll feature them here!  Just email us at mewcrew [ at ] gmail [ dot ] com.
