Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week is now over...but it doesn't have to be!

Did you know that September 19-25 was Adopt-a-Less-Adoptable-Pet Week?  Well the fine humans at The Mew Crew figure that there is no reason why we can't keep the spirit of AaLAPW going right here!

Maybe you've never heard of AaLAPW before.  It's a week, started by Petfinder, that helps accelerate adoptions for "Less Adoptable" pets.  If you read the link above, it describes in greater detail what classifies as a less desireable animal.

These are pets that, despite being extremely loveable, cute and snuggly, are passed over for other animals.  They end up being left in foster care or shelters for a year or more.  They are overlooked for silly reasons.  Unfortunately, they just don't meet a potential owner's picky requirements, such as color.  Or maybe they at one time had a health issue, which makes their medical record look less than perfect.  There are just so many prejudices that owners have.  And somehow those erroneous ideas are okay when they're applied to pets.  But if they were applied to humans?  They're called racism, ageism and prejudice against the "disabled".

Meet Obie...how can you hate this face?

Now the humans at The Mew Crew are big believers in kitties, including black cats, getting their fair chance.  It seems that the website Your Daily Cute recently had something to say about this, too. If we yet have to
convinced you that black cats are 100% awesome, please check out Your Daily Cute's recent article: http://www.yourdailycute.com/2010/09/black-cats-are-new-black.html

See?  They really are awesome.  How about we keep the spirit of AaLAPW going by helping to find black cats homes? Sounds good to me!

I mean black cats really are the new black!  Want to adopt your own black cat?  Email us at mewcrew [ at ] gmail [ dot ] com.

It's kitten season...are you SURE you want a kitten?

It's high kitten season (and primary adoption season) during the months of September and October.  And I mean, kittens are cute right?  People love and flock towards the snuggly faces of kittens.  And where we definitely agree that they are cute, we also usually caution people: "Uhh...do you really know what you're getting into with a kitten?"

Many times new owners don't realize that kittens are also curious, clumsy, delicate, and a complete blank slate. Are you experienced in raising a well socialized kitty (aka a buddy)?  Do you have the time and patience to deal with a kitten climbing up your curtains or bare skin? Do you have the patience to splice together a modem cord which has been cut by kitten teeth at 2 am in the morning? Trust me, that is not want you want to have happen, particularly when a big report is due at 9 am the next morning.

But let's just focus on the clumsy part for a second.

I cannot tell you how expensive fixing a kitten's clumsy accidents are. In fact, I think they are the vet's favorite thing to charge for.

Imagine this: you awaken at 4 am to use the bathroom. As you exit the bathroom, you hear a faint cry in the distance. Oh no, is that meowing? But where is it coming from? You can hear the kitten but you can't find it...oh no, this thing sounds like it's in pain and just desperate. Frantically, you start to search for the source of the mews.

Oh no, what are you going to find!?!?

It's definitely a kitten.  Wedged between a wall and a heavy bookcase. Yes, somehow it has suspended itself directly in between this piece of furniture and the wall. You peer into the tiny dark crack to confirm that your sleepy mind isn't playing games on you.  As they are wont to say on the internets, "WTF?"

In fact, you almost wonder if aliens had a hand in doing this because, like the pyramids, it would have taken super human strength to move the bookcase, let alone wedge a kitten back there. But now it's you freaking out and shouting "OH NO KITTY! I'll get you...HOLD ON!"

Begin Kitty Emergency Panic Mode....

Now WIIIIDE awake, you're tossing books off the shelf and telling kitty to hold on like it's trapped at the bottom of a well.  Oh...and you weren't planning on going back to sleep were you?  You test the bookcase to see if it's light enough to move so you can rescue the poor kitten.

Finally, the kitty is free and it's now yelping in pain as you're giving it a tiny triage.  So now what?  Uhh...quick!  To the Emergency Vet (if you can find one, that is)!

Several hours and hundreds of dollars later, you emerge with a kitten and the worlds most expensive, tiny emergency xrays.  Oh and a mini splint and/or various medications which are more expensive than any prescription you've ever had for yourself.  What was wrong?  A sprain (if you're lucky)....which it inflicted upon its wee self before you even woke up.  Oh by the way, you just realized that you were supposed to leave for work 45 minutes ago...and you're not even home yet!

Yay, kitten fun times!

Okay that pink bandage is pretty cute.

Anyways, get a kitten if you want.  And if you get one, please get a pair because they'll be better adjusted and keep each other company.  But maybe...just maybe...think long and hard before you dismiss the one-year-old cat for a kitten.  Leave the kittens to some fool who doesn't know any better.  :-)

How about we set you up with a one-year-old buddy instead?  I mean go ahead and adopt the Evil Knevil of Kittens if you want.  But incase you aren't up for that kind of thrill, just email us at mewcrew [ at ] gmail [ dot ] com and we'll get you paired up with a kitty buddy today!

Have you met Poof's brother yet?

Goof...just chillin'.

Meet Goof.  He's also called Impostor Poof because he's an excellent doppelganger for his brother.  Here's his stats...

Name: Goof, Impostor Poof, Impostor
Sex: M (neutered)
Age: 1 year old...where's the birthday cake?
Color: Tuxedo Domestic Long Hair
Special skills: Laying around looking cute, causing mischief, running under your feet, pretending to be his brother.

You can see from the picture above that he rather enjoys his naps.  He's a happy cat that is fun to have around.  He is always purring and definitely enjoys the company of humans and loves his toys.  But he's independent enough for someone who is busy or doesn't necessarily want a cat who'd be a constant companion.  Of course since you'd never want him to get lonely, he'd be perfect to be adopted out with his brother, Poof. Can you tell the differences between them?

These brothers are ready to go to their new forever home!

Want to adopt them?  Email The Mew Crew at mewcrew [ at ] gmail [ dot ] com to get an adoption started today!

Rescue work ain't always easy.

Because sometimes you have to get up REALLY early to get a kitty to services.  Your drive often looks like this...

Do you see how early this picture was taken?!?!?

Normally I'd be going to bed at 5 am, but in this scenario I was already awake and driving home.  When you do kitty rescue or foster work, there's always a ton of things that you have to deal with that you might never have learned about otherwise.  These tasks can be stinky, smelly, perplexing and heart-breaking.  Definitely not glorious, by any means.

And then of course a lot of times you are carting around sad littles faces, which also pull at the heart strings.
Just look at this face...

Toes, patient but unhappy.

Like the look of this beautiful Torbie girl?  Adopt her and her sister from The Mew Crew today!

Rainy days and Mondays...

Here are some cute little kitty faces to help kick off the week.

Unfortunately, they guys in this photo have all been rehomed, but just look at those faces!   They're sweet and loving (and enjoying their new forever home).

Lazy Sunday

It was a busy weekend for The Mew Crew and its volunteers. Adoptions are starting to kick up and we are so happy to be helping kitties find a good home.  But don't worry, we've definitely got a good Mew for you when you're ready.

Here's a cute kitty to start off everyone's week.  Poof's whiskers are quite amazing, I think.  Don't you?

This loveable, goofy guy also has a brother, who I think has always been jealous that his nose stripe isn't as perfect.  And yes, they're both up for adoption.  Adopt Poof, his brother, or both by emailing us at mewcrew [ at ] gmail [ dot ] com now to schedule an in home visit!

Psst....you didn't forget that you can always foster or sponsor a Mew, right?  Okay, good.
